Corfu Greece
It was in 1443 that for the first time the Venetian administration
decided to constitute an Archive in Corfu from the collection
of the documents concerning the management of the local government.
These documents were the Acts of the central and the local
government, verdicts of the former government (Augevines),
and the privileges granted to the City and the Church by
several rulers, even those coming from the Byzantine era.
The next years the initial lot of the documents was enriched
with new material, while the appointment of a Secretary of
the Community marked the constitution of a special service,
which took part in the activities of the City's Council and
had the responsibility of the collection and the classification
of all governmental documents.
During the Turkish siege of 1537 the Archive of Corfu was set on fire and was
completely destroyed. At that time the documents concerning the Anjou period
were lost forever. Later, the most important documents of the Venetian Authorities
were obtained in copies from the Venetian Chancelorship. Since that time, following
the course of the government and her various branches, the Community Archive,
together with the archives of other services that were either becoming autonomous
or organized (Health Office, Notary Offices, Church, Juries, etc), grew the amount
of the stored records and developed its managerial scheme.

Ancestor of the Archives of
Corfu is the Chancery, which was established with the 1817
Constitution, during the British Occupation, and received the
documents of all the former periods. The Chancery carried on
working even after the Union with Greece and was included in
1914 to the State Archive Services together with the Archive
of the Ionian Senate, which was established during the period
of the Septinsular Republic (1802) and received the archives
of the Senate until 1864. Both archival services followed parallel
courses until 1993, when they were joined under the title Corfu
County Archives.
The Archives of Corfu today are housed in the building of the former British
Barracks inside the Old Fortress and its 70 categories cover insufficiently the
period from 1320 to 1537, but with remarkable efficiency the period from 1538
until today. The archival material, which continuously grows with the addition
of other public and privet archives, covers more than 8,000 linear meters of
shelves, it is the richest in historical documents and is one of the biggest
in Greece. It also has valuable collections of painted parchment documents, architectural
drawings, maps and epipedographies-engravings.
The Archives of Corfu is operated to modern European standards and the latest
facilities, while the researchers have access to all the archival material, which
is classified either by the various administrators in the island's history, or
according to the public service responsible for producing the document. The Archive
has department of registry, secretariat, reading room, services for paper and
parchment maintenance, bookbinding, photography and microphotography. There is
a continuous attempt to facilitate the research with the upgrading of the structures
or with directory construction and the use of macromedia, while many cultural
interventions have taken place like archival exhibitions, conferences and publications
of books that concern the Eptanisian history.
